On Weds 25 and Thurs 26 July 2018 from 10.30-4.30, The Bead Society are welcoming Russian bead embroiderer Olga Martynova who has developed a new style of ‘casual kokoshnik’ to Mandeville Hall, Reach Rd, Burwell, Cambridgeshire CB25 0AR. Her project has evolved the idea of this very traditional Russian headpiece into a modern and wearable, very feminine and beautiful accessory for (almost) everyday use! They can be made and worn as wedding tiaras or even smart evening wear!
This is a fabulous opportunity for members to learn something new and different but which fits well into the modern world! The main feature of the kokoshnik is its construction. Embroidery is attached to a special steel frame, which does not lie on the head like a hair band, but stands up like a crown or tiara. It is not fixed on top of the head like a hat, but it beautifully frames the face. Olga will show beaders how to make a kokoshnik which will not require any additional fasteners – it just sits on the head thanks to the steel base inside.
At each two-day workshop Olga will teach:
• the stages of work on the kokoshnik
• constructing the kokoshnik pattern (the easiest way to achieve symmetry in this type of embroidery)
• embroidery of an ornament, fixing cabochons, elements of the national Russian embroidery – sazhenie po beli – using cord and beads.
• mounting of the embroidery and the reverse side on the kokoshnik and edge decorating.
The materials required list is given on the Bead Society website. There are three options to purchase supplies (payable on the day of the workshop to the tutor) depending on whether you want to collect your own beads and cabochons. There are some items which only Olga will be able to supply.
Bead Society members free - Non members £12 (only £6 per day) to book a place, please contact secretary Carole Morris on 01638 742024 or email her at email@example.com.

Needwood Beaders - Two years ago we held a Beadathon at the National Trust's Sudbury Hall when we attempted to bead the length of the Long Gallery - 138 feet 2 inches. We did this and more, getting all the way along the Gallery, across it and part way down the other side. This year we'll be back there. Over two days - Saturday July 28th and Sunday 29th July - we'll be asking visitors to join us, as we try to make a rope of beads all the way around the space - and possibly further. Each day we'll bead from 1pm to 4.30pm and we're sure there'll be the same fantastic buzz and enthusiasm as there was last time when all ages joined in. For more details contact Maureen King at email@example.com
